On February 11, internationally, women will be recognized for their significant achievements in science and a focus on girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers. While the event does recognize women in STEM, the day itself brings emphasis to this growing STEM career for everyone. Here are three ways to observe the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Three girls hovered over a microscope

  1. Recognize and acknowledge the contributions of the successes of women who are significantcontributors to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. You can research notable figures or watch movies about notable figures in STEM.
  2. If you know a girl interested in science, encourage them to focus on that career. You can provide them with resources on colleges and careers in the STEM field.
  3. Encourage them to participate in other community organizations that have lessons focused on STEM. Union County 4-H provides different lessons and opportunities geared towards science, technology, engineering, and mathematics including electric, robotics, agriculture technology, andso much more. Careers in STEM are continuing to grow, and it is important to provide opportunities for young people to venture into different STEM careers.

If you are interested in learning more opportunities, contact the local 4-H office at 704-283-3735 or 704-283-3740.
