Occasionally, you need to ‘grab’ a picture of a window or the whole desktop of your Mac Screen.

Capture the entire screen

  • Command-Shift-3 captures the entire screen. After you release the keys, a PNG file named “Picture #” (numbers increment automatically) will appear on your desktop.
  • Double-click the picture file to edit it in Preview if you want to rename, change the format, crop, resize, or edit other characteristics of the file.

Capture an area

  • Command-Shift-4 lets you capture an area. After you release the keys, your pointer changes to cross-hairs. Drag your pointer from one corner of the area you want to grab to the opposite corner.
  • A PNG file named “Picture #” will be created on your desktop.
  • Double-click the picture file to edit it in Preview if you want to rename, change the format, crop, resize, or edit other characteristics of the file.

Use Preview

  • File -> Grab -> Window | Selection | Timed Screen
  • Saves capture as TIFF files on the desktop and displays in Preview.
    • Window will give you a camera to select the window you want to capture
    • Selection will give you a pointer to select a section of the screen to capture
    • Timed Screen gives you a clock with about 10 seconds to get the screen the way you want it before it captures – good for capturing dropdown menus.
