First Genetically Engineered Salmon Sold in Canada

— Written By

The first genetically engineered salmon has been sold in Canada. AquAdvantage salmon is a genetically engineered Atlantic salmon that has been genetically engineered by a company named AquaBounty to reach market weight in half the time of conventional salmon. The genetically engineered salmon was first demonstrated in 1989 and has spent about 25 years trying to clear regulatory hurdles for commercial sales. The first salmon sold were imported from a facility in Panama, while the company increases production at a facility on Prince Edward Island in Canada.

The genetically engineered (GE) salmon was also approved in the US. However, a rider to spending bill will prohibit import of GE salmon into the US until FDA mandates labeling.
