Plagued by Pest, African Farmers May Soon Have Access to Insect-Resistant GMO Cowpeas—For Free

Cowpeas (black-eyed peas) are a major source of protein for some Africans. Pod-borers can cause up to 80% yield loss. Genetically engineered Bt cowpeas have been developed which are resistant to the pod-borer. Monsanto has donated the intellectual property rights for the technology to the project funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and US Agency for International Development allowing the seed to be distributed to farmers for free.
