Rice Plants Engineered for Better Photosynthesis Make More Rice

— Written By

Researchers from scientists at South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou have genetically engineered rice to reduce carbon loss due to photorespiration. Photorespiration is common in plants and basically “reverses” what photosynthesis does and can reduce photosynthetic gain by as much as 25%. They found as high as a 27% yield increase in spring planted rice due to increased photosynthetic output.

The study was published in Molecular Plant.
